A stash of cannabis infused olive oil lasts for months in the back of your fridge.

Are you looking for a versatile way to enjoy the benefits of cannabis? cannabis-infused olive oil may become your new pantry staple.

Whether you would like to make a cannabis-infused olive oil salad dressing or sauté vegetables in a cannabis olive oil tincture, cannabis-infused olive oil is great to have on hand. You can easily make your own cannabis olive oil in just a few easy steps.

    Choosing Your Olive Oil

The first step in making your own weed olive oil is choosing the type of olive oil to use. As any foodie knows, there are different olive oil varieties with their own flavors and benefits.

Often, you’ll see pure olive oil and extra virgin olive oil. Here’s how each works when making cannabis olive oil. It’s worth noting that neither cannabis nor olive oils should be exposed to high temperatures, which can destroy beneficial compounds.

    Pure Olive Oil

Pure olive oil is a blend of cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and other processed oils. It’s considered to be of lower quality than extra virgin olive oil but has its merits.

Pure olive oil has a more neutral flavor, lighter color, and higher smoke point than extra virgin olive oil. This makes pure olive oil a great choice if you plan to cook with your weed olive oil.

    Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil, with its Omega-3 fatty acids, is a healthy choice for cannabis olive oil. This is perfect for when you want to use cannabis olive oil tincture in dips, salad dressings, and recipes that don’t call for heat.

Cannabis-infused olive oil has a smoke point of 400 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s not the best candidate for sauteing or adding to baked goods. Try using weed olive oil as a dip for focaccia or even as an ice cream topping (trust us - it’s amazing!).

    Cannabis-infused Olive Oil Recipe

Making your own cannabis olive oil is easy, and you’ll take pride in using your weed olive oil and sharing your cannabis olive oil when friends join you for dinner. Just follow these easy steps.

    Ingredients:

    • 2 cups olive oil of your choice
    • 1 ounce cannabis of your choice

Step 1 - Decarboxylate your Cannabis

To get the most from the THC and CBD in your cannabis when making cannabis-infused olive oil, the cannabis must first be decarboxylated. Decarboxylation happens when cannabis is exposed to heat or light.

The easiest way to do this is to bake the cannabis flowers at 240 to 250℉ (115-121℃) for about 40 minutes.

Don’t skip this step! Decarbing your flower activates the CBD benefits as well as the pleasant from the THC.

The type of cannabis you use to make weed olive oil may need more or less baking time to decarboxylate, so ask your local budtender for advice.

Step 2 – Mix Olive Oil and Cannabis

The Origins Cannabis recipe for cannabis-infused olive oil calls for two cups of olive oil and one ounce of decarboxylated cannabis.

Add both into pint size Mason jars. Leave about ½ inch of space at the top of each jar and seal with a lid. Be careful not to fully tighten.

Step 3 – Prepare Crock Pot

Since olive oil and cannabis both need low heat, a Crock-PotCrock Pot is an easy tool to use in making cannabis-infused olive oil.

Place a dishcloth in the bottom of the Crock-PotCrock Pot to act as a barrier between the cooker and your Mason jar. This prevents the Mason jar from cracking. Fill with enough water to cover the mason jars.

Step 4 – Start Cooking Cannabis Olive Oil

Place a digital thermometer into the water and set the slow cooker on high. Once the water reaches 185 degrees, turn your Crock-Pot to low and place Mason jars on top of the cloth in the Crock-Pot.

Place the lid on the slow cooker and leave your cannabis-infused olive oil to cook for four hours.

Step 5 – Remove Cannabis Olive Oil Jars

Carefully remove your jars of cannabis-infused olive oil and set them aside to cool. If you have canning experience, you may have a jar-lifting tool on hand.

Step 6 – Strain Cannabis Olive Oil

You’ll want to strain out the cannabis pulp from your weed olive oil. This can be done by using a fine-mesh strainer, a French press, a paper filter, or cheesecloth. The result is cannabis-infused olive oil that you can use for a variety of cannabis-infused olive oil recipes.

Here are a few frequently asked questions about making cannabis olive oil that will add to your enjoyment of weed olive oil.

Q: What’s the Shelf Life of Weed Olive Oil?

If stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, your cannabis olive oil should be fresh for at least 60 days. If you store your weed olive oil in the refrigerator, it will solidify, but your cannabis-infused olive oil will become liquid again at room temperature.

Q: What Type of Cannabis Should I Use?

The best cannabis for you may not be the best for someone else. When making your own cannabis olive oil for the first time, using a variety with less THC may be a good idea. Or, try adding less cannabis per jar.
